Discovery Behavioral Health Announces Acquisition of 12-Site Outpatient Mental Health Provider

Discovery Behavioral Health Inc. has acquired Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry.

Los Alamitos, California-based Discovery Behavioral Health expands its presence in Texas and California through the deal. Based in Huntington Beach, California, Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry operates 12 locations, according to a news release.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal also expands Discovery Behavioral Health’s professional psychiatric services division, Discovery MD. It offers outpatient treatment services such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine, and medicated-assisted therapy.

Discovery Behavioral Health CEO John Peloquin told BHB in an interview that the Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry complements his company’s existing footprint. Specifically, it bolsters the company’s TMS and psychiatry offerings.

In turn, the company will add its other services to the Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry locations

TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of the brain that control mood and is used to ease depression symptoms.

Discovery Behavioral Health announced the rollout of DiscoveryMD, its fourth division, in March.

“In each of our service lines, our primary growth driver is organic,” Peloquin said. “We do several transactions a year that makes strategic alignment. This one aligned well: a good quality operator, couple that with what we’re already doing, it makes sense.”

Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry was previously owned by Jeffrey Poulton and Suzanne Jessee, Peloquin said.

The deal also marks the continuation of Discovery’s expansion across the U.S. In June, the company announced it opened new DiscoveryMD locations in West Los Angeles, California, and Tacoma, Washington. In March, it announced the acquisition of King County, Washington-based Dan Med TMS Neuro Institute.

In 2021, Discovery added 10 new treatment centers in seven states and made acquisitions in Houston and Kansas City.

Founded in 1985, the company now operates more than 145 treatment centers. It contracts with 100 payers and managed care organizations, the release states.

Webster Equity Partners first invested in Discovery Behavioral Health in 2011, according to Webster’s website.

Discovery also hired a new chief medical officer, Dr. Matthew Ruble, in June.
