Dr. Caroline Carney, chief medical officer for Magellan Health Inc., now also holds the additional role of president of behavioral health for Magellan Healthcare.
Magellan Health announced Friday that Carney will help the company advance its clinical mission, further establishing it as a leader in behavioral health through collaborative and integrated approaches across the health care spectrum, according to a news release. Magellan Healthcare is the health care services subsidiary of Magellan Health.
As chief medical officer for Magellan Health, Carney oversees the development of clinical programs for the company. She took on the CMO role in June 2020.
“Caroline is a forward-thinking leader who has a true passion for advancing behavioral health and has become a recognized and distinguished industry strategist and leader across multiple specialties,” Magellan Health CEO Ken Fasola said in the release. “I look forward to the visionary thinking that she brings to her newly expanded role.”
Carney joined Magellan Health in 2016 as senior vice president and chief medical officer of Magellan Healthcare, according to her LinkedIn profile. Prior to that, she was the chief medical officer for Tenet Health Plans.
She is also a board-certified internist and a board-certified psychiatrist that sees patients at a local federally qualified health center. She earned her medical degree and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa where she also directed the med-psych residency program, according to the release.
“I am so honored to have been chosen for this role at a time when high-touch and high-tech whole health solutions are such a critical societal need,” Carney said in the release. “I look forward to continuing to demonstrate our commitment and support to the communities and individuals whom we serve.”
St. Louis-based Centene Corp. acquired Magellan Health in a $2.2 billion deal that closed earlier in the year. Since then, Centene named Magellan Health’s now-former Chief Operating Officer Jim Murray as its Chief Transformation Officer. In that role, Murray will lead Centene’s Value Creation Office and the Centene Advanced Behavioral Health division.
In January, a Centene exec said that the Magellan Health deal will help Centene drive greater integration of behavioral health and physical health.
