Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) says its network is being restored after a malware attack in the early morning of Sept. 27.
“We have a large number of corporate-level administrative systems, and the recovery process is either complete or well underway in a prioritized manner,” UHS said Thursday in a statement. “We are making steady progress and are confident that we will be able to get hospital networks restored and reconnected soon.”
Headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, UHS has 328 behavioral health facilities spread across the US, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. It also has 26 acute care hospitals, 42 outpatient facilities and ambulatory care access points, an insurance offering, a physician network and other related service offerings.
The security attack — which NBC News called likely “one of the largest medical cyberattacks in United States history” — prompted UHS to temporarily take its IT operations offline. Instead, facilities used back-up methods to communicate patient information, such as paper documentation.
UK facilities were not affected by the ransomware attack, the company said.
